HistoricJackson Heights

Jackson Heights Historic District

A planned garden-apartment district built between roughly 1910 and 1950, with brick co-op blocks arranged around large private interior gardens. It is both a New York City historic district (designated 1993) and on the National Register of Historic Places.

Why it matters

One of the first garden-apartment communities in the United States and the birthplace of the residential co-operative in New York. The surrounding neighborhood is now among the most linguistically diverse in the world, with a landmark South Asian commercial strip on 74th Street and Latin American businesses along Roosevelt Avenue.

Louis Armstrong House Museum

The modest brick house where Louis and Lucille Armstrong lived from 1943 until his death in 1971, preserved with its original interiors. An adjacent Louis Armstrong Center opened in 2023 housing the archives and a performance space.

Why it matters

A National Historic Landmark and New York City landmark, it is the best-preserved home of any major jazz figure and a reminder that America's most famous musician chose a working-class Queens block over Manhattan.
