BeachRockaway Beach

Rockaway Beach and Boardwalk

A public ocean beach and 5.5-mile boardwalk on the Rockaway Peninsula, the largest urban beach in the United States. It includes New York City's only legal surfing beaches, at Beach 67th to 69th and Beach 87th to 92nd Streets.

Why it matters

A century-old summer destination reachable by subway, the Rockaways are where New York City meets the Atlantic. The boardwalk was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and rebuilt in concrete with reinforced dunes, completed in 2017.

BeachNeponsit / Rockaway Park

Jacob Riis Park

A federally managed ocean beach on the Rockaway Peninsula within Gateway National Recreation Area, with a mile-long boardwalk and a 1932 Art Deco bathhouse. Its parking field was originally an airfield.

Why it matters

Named for the reformer and photographer Jacob Riis, it was conceived as a public seaside resort for working-class New Yorkers. The bathhouse and clock are New York City landmarks, and Riis has been a gathering place for the city's LGBTQ community since the mid-20th century.

ParkBroad Channel

Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

A roughly 9,000-acre federal wildlife refuge of salt marsh, ponds, upland field and open bay, administered by the National Park Service as part of Gateway National Recreation Area. Its trails circle the West Pond and East Pond.

Why it matters

One of the most important urban migratory bird habitats in the northeastern United States, with well over 300 species recorded, and the only wildlife refuge in the national park system reachable by subway.
