A private planned community begun in 1909 on land bought by the Russell Sage Foundation, designed by Grosvenor Atterbury with landscaping by Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. Its Tudor-style Station Square faces the LIRR station.
Why it matters
One of the earliest and most influential garden suburbs in the United States and a model for planned communities nationwide. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.

A 14,000-seat horseshoe stadium at the West Side Tennis Club, opened in 1923. It hosted the U.S. National Championships and later the US Open until 1977, and now operates primarily as an outdoor concert venue.
Why it matters
The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and Simon & Garfunkel all played here, and it was the stage for Arthur Ashe's 1968 US Open win. Reopened for concerts in 2013 after decades of decline.
